{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with F1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a life-threatening accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I approached Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Track Safety Questioned
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a active circuit safety personnel can be permitted to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Official Investigation Underway
The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the FIA
"In the third rotation, track officials were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were canceled and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
"We are still investigating what happened following that moment"
