Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
He stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward following their progress".
Summers, who formerly headed Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed messages showed that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected his determination to resign.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This announcement arrives after the two houses of Congress decided on this week to pass a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its documents on the case.
The bill will then proceed to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to approve the bill, after changing his view on the matter following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The emails revealed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with he often trying to connect the academic to prominent world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the messages were shared with the wider community, Summers said he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to restore faith and repair bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Career Background
Summers held high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from five years and continues to be a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where he was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be connected with the institution.
The former official entered the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to oust its CEO OpenAI's head.
